Community engagement

The Wards 3 & 4 Community Prevention Networks have been established in support of our overarching goal to reduce and prevent underage drinking and youth marijuana use among children and youth ages 8-18 in Wards 3 and 4. A critical outcome of the Strategic Prevention Framework State Incentive Grant (SPF SIG) is a Community Based Action Plan (from the community, by the community, with the community) with specific evidenced based targeted strategies. The intent is to engage diverse groups of community stakeholders and key leaders in community prevention network action planning to address needed community and system changes for youth substance use/abuse prevention. This will be accomplished on the basis of partnership development, community problem-solving, leadership enhancement and data-driven action planning. Ultimately, each Community Prevention Network will contribute to the development of our Strategic Prevention Framework by conducting community assessments, developing comprehensive prevention interventions, and building our prevention network capacity.
COMMUNITY NETWORK LEADERSHIP ROLES
Diverse and effective community network leadership will help achieve the following key requirements:§ Provide an understanding of the local conditions that contribute to marijuana and alcohol use among children in youth.§ Identify community assets/resources and gaps in services.§ Build the capacity and readiness to act.§ Support the creation of a targeted action plan based on evidenced based strategies.§ Help mobilize the community to support the strategies.
MAJOR STRATEGIC PREVENTION FRAMEWORK TASKS/ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN
§ Identify and discuss the root causes and local conditions associated with underage drinking and marijuana among youth.§ Prioritize the root causes and local conditions that are explored in conjunction to identifying and discussing the root causes and local conditions associated with underage drinking and marijuana among youth.§ Identify the readiness and capacity of community to address each factor.§ Provide recommendations for very specific evidence-based strategies for implementation. § Help to identify and describe resources that are available in the community.
